Virtual Support, Real Help

Support groups and message boards are valuable if facing a canine crisis.

A few years ago, I underwent extensive knee surgery. Thanks to a skilled doctor, a supportive husband, and an Internet message board comprised of people who’d either undergone or were about to embark on similar procedures, I made it through with both my physical and mental health intact.

Lucky, the author’s dog, in week one of recovery following “tibial plateau leveling osteotomy” (TPLO) surgery. Holland received many tips from message board members on how to help with Lucky’s postsurgical difficulties.
