Frequently Asked Questions
I would like to know if you investigated Orijen dog food. I did not find it listed as one of Whole Dog Journals approved dry foods of 2011. Yet I noticed it pictured on the front page. In the February issue with the approved dog foods, I see on the cover a bag of Orijen dog food (which we use), but I dont see it in your approved list. What is your opinion of this food? Is it not good?
Dreading the Vet
I have two rescue Danes and I also assist with Great Dane rescue. Recently, I fostered a black, 2 1/2-year-old, neutered Dane. He had no biting history and is friendly with kids, people, and other dogs. The previous owner was honest and told me that the dog did not like the vets office, baths, or his feet to be handled. I took the dog to a veterinary hospital and he did very well in the waiting room with the other dogs. I praised him and treated him for all his calm behavior. I explained to the veterinarians technician that the dog did not do well at the vets and that I had a soft muzzle that I would put on the dog.
Choosing Canine Supplements Wisely
Sometimes, the deficiency is discovered when a blood test is performed for the purpose of analyzing the dogs nutritional status (although, in my opinion, there are some problems with this methodology (see Blood Testing for Deficiencies, next page). In other cases, a dog owner might know that the diet he feeds is deficient in a certain nutrient, and he supplements rather than changes the formulation of the diet. For example, dogs who are fed a diet based on raw meats and vegetables, but who dont receive fresh ground bones, are more than likely to be deficient in calcium.
A Dog Who Is Always Hungry
We adopted our rescue dog about a year ago. She had been a stray, and at the time we adopted her the vet thought she was about ten months old. Ever since weve had her she has had the same symptoms she doesnt seem to be able to properly digest her food. She is ravenously hungry all the time. She will eat unlimited amounts of anything fruits, vegetables, yogurt, bread, anything she can get her paws on. And her stools are not normal; she has about four bowel movements per day, and they get progressively softer throughout the day.
Out For Blood
If your dogs are fighting, and are causing severe damage to each other or one dog is causing severe damage to another Im sorry to say that you are dealing with the most difficult of all canine behavior problems, the one with the worst possible prognosis. Your options are extremely limited, because the treatment really should have happened when the dog was 4 1/2 months old, which is when dogs normally learn bite inhibition.
Mangy Mutts?
I have a litter of Boxer puppies and two young female Boxers with a slight case of demodectic mange. Ive been told so much conflicting information about this condition. Ive been told by several vets and breeders that demodectic mange is not contagious, but is a genetic disorder brought on by stress or a lowered immune system. One vet (who breeds Boxers) told me it IS contagious and I should put my dogs to sleep! These are my babies; there is no way Im going to destroy them over a skin condition they arent even hurting from. They never scratch or itch.
Too Mean To Keep?
I have a serious problem with my six-year-old neutered male Vizsla. He was a high strung, but good tempered dog for the first three years of his life. Something seemed to snap after that. He is loving and affectionate most of the time, but he gets aggressive when family members leave the kitchen (he and our other dog are limited to the kitchen and family room). He barks, snaps at them, and snags clothes with his teeth. He has never chomped down and bitten anyone, but he has scratched people with a tooth.
Colitis: An Urgent Problem
Conventional medical practitioners use the word colitis to indicate inflammation of the colon (the large intestine), as opposed to inflammation of the small intestine or the stomach. One of the large intestines most important roles is to absorb water. If the colon is not functioning properly, a lot of water is left in the stool; thats diarrhea. There are many different types of diarrhea, and, unpleasant as it may be to contemplate, the characteristics of the diarrhea help us identify which part of the dogs digestive system is not working properly.
Urine Trouble
My 2-1/2 year old spayed female Akita is showing a pattern of recurring bladder infections. An ultrasound showed scar tissue from a long-term infection before I adopted her from a rescue group. When she gets an infection, there is blood in her urine and the pH is 9.0. I understand there is a chicken and egg argument about the high pH and infections. Is there anything that will help lower the pH of her urine and make her less prone to infection, or is the high pH more likely just a result of the infection?
Girl Trouble
We have two female dogs: a five year old Newfoundland and a two-year-old Shih Tzu. They are rivals. They both like to chew on rawhide bones, even if I give them the exact same kind. As soon as the Newf gets up off of her place the Shih Tzu goes and steals her bone. Then the Newf wants the Shih Tzus bone! This occurs even if the Shih Tzu has a very small bone. Another annoying behavior is that the Shih Tzu barks in a very threatening way whenever the Newf barks to be let back in the house. The Newf goes outside frequently to enjoy the air, so this is very annoying. We would like the Newf to be the Alpha dog. What can we do to keep her position?

We love our Labrador Retriever, Bailey, very much. We rescued her when she was six weeks old. She is now almost two years old. We believe that a dog is part of the family and therefore should live inside the house with the rest of the family. However, we were warned about Labs and their desire to chew and need for a lot of exercise. We were prepared for the worst. We limited Baileys living quarters to the kitchen and family room.

Megaesophagus truly is a horrible condition, both for the dog, who really suffers, and for the dogs owner, who cant do very much to help. However, there are a couple of holistic healing methods that Ive seen help dogs with megaesophagus. I use a lot of homeopathy in my practice, so of course, my first suggestion is to use homeopathy, which is entirely dependent on the bodys ability to respond. Homeopathy is energy medicine; the purpose is to present the energy picture of a specific problem to the body so the body will raise a defense, a response to that trigger at both the physical and the energy level.
Case of the Missing Hormones
Incontinence in spayed females is fairly common. The problem is caused by a lack of estrogen, which, of course, was brought about by the spay surgery. Many people assume that when females are spayed, the veterinarian simply ties the tubes, that is, cuts and ties off the fallopian tubes so that the ovum can not travel from the ovaries, down the fallopian tubes, and become fertilized. Actually, the veterinarian removes the ovaries and usually, the uterus, too. The reason for this is that you not only want the female to become incapable of becoming pregnant, but also, you want her not to exhibit symptoms of heat.

I have two nine-month-old puppies, brothers from the same litter, who have received all the usually recommended vaccinations, on exactly the same schedules (I have taken them to the veterinarians at the same time for all their maintenance visits). Recently, after being boarded at a large facility, one of them began to exhibit symptoms of parvovirus. After receiving IV fluids and antibiotics, he recovered, but I am shaken up. Why should a well-vaccinated puppy contract the disease? And why should my other pup, who has been exposed to all the same things, be fine?

I own two beautiful Rottweilers, a male and a female. They are uncle and niece. Ive had the male from birth; hes now four years old, has the most outstanding personality, and his temperament is excellent. He gets along with everyone, hes obedience trained, and there just isnt enough I could say about him. A couple of years ago I decided to purchase his niece, a neutered female. She is also obedience trained. Initially, the two got along as if it were meant to be.
